Premiered
June 17th, 23rd, and 25th, 2023 at UCLA

THE CENTER CANNOT HOLD PART 2: RECOVERY tells the story of Elyn Saks living with schizophrenia, joining USC law school faculty, and falling in love while on her path to recovery and resilience. The premiere is funded by LACDMH Take Action LA for Mental Health. The performance features Jamie Chamberlin, Rebecca Sjöwall, Ariel Pistorino, Jon Lee Keenan, Raymond McLeod and Steve Pence, with chorus and chamber orchestra conducted by Matthew Miles, stage direction by Megan Cooper.

For the pre-opera workshop, speakers include members of Healthy African American Families II from South Los Angeles to share stories of Community Partners in Care and Together for Wellness; Juntos; DMH Leaders including Drs. Lisa Wong (June 17) and Curley Bonds (June 23); and Elyn Saks, Kenneth Wells; and the opera Chorus for “Thriver” by Wells and Dr. Loretta Jones (poem).

The opera and pre-workshop may have an evaluation after UCLA human subjects approval, by pre and post surveys and post discussion.
